Right here, right now, you're exactly where you're supposed to be!

August 30, 2008 8:57 am – Nica time!

So, we made it! The day started off pretty early as my dad drove me up to Boston for my flight. Jen came to visit since she lives so close now which was awesome! I got to talk to her for a bit and learn more about her JVC job this year before she had to leave. Then Kristen’s family and me and my dad got something to eat and sat around for a while. We probably went through security only 45 minutes before our flight if I had to guess because by the time we go to our gate we were practically boarding. Then, it was off to Atlanta.
The flight wasn’t so bad, but of course I can never sleep. When we got off in Atlanta, I was under the impression we were going to be at Gate A7 and have to get to A20 or 30 something based on what was online. We soon found out we in terminal T and saw a screen (along with our boarding pass) that said gate E-26. So we hopped on a tram to the furthest concourse (apparently it goes T, A, B, C, D, E). Then we get to E26 and who do we see but about 100 air force men. I was so confused because I didn’t understand why they’d all be going to Nicaragua, and Kristen was freaked out that we were gonna get attacked in the air hahaha. But then we looked at the screen for that and it said Frankfurt-not exactly where we’re going. So then we went to look at another screen that had been changed to E28, so we walked there. We sat for a while. Then, probably 45 minutes before our flight we were told to move to E15, although I believe this screen said Athens, Greece. We were assured we were in the right place, so we waited. Here, Kristen ate ice cream and I ate the pizza I had packed (our last American food!). Finally, we boarded the plane to Managua.
This is picture of some corn and a carrot hanging from the ceiling of the airport in Atlanta…
<---- When we landed (around 7:30 here, 9:30 at home) it was already pitch black and we had a hard time picking out where the “city” was and what was airport runways, etc. It seemed like the lights just came out of nowhere. When we landed we had to go through customs, and then get our luggage. After we picked up our luggage, someone checked to make sure the names on the bags we took matched the names on our passports – I thought that was random because that’s never happened to me before, but oh well! Then when we stepped outside, Christopher Johnson (Fairfield Study Abroad) was waiting for us and took us over to where Sarah and Alex were waiting. While we waited for Greisy for and Lora (because their flight from San Salvador to Managua was canceled) we got some money from the ATM. (apparently there are no ATM fees?)

Me & Kristen in the Managua airport! --->

When we were all there, Christopher, Kathe (from UCA) and the six of us students piled into a van to get dropped off at our houses. There are 3 houses, 2 per Fairfield students per house. Kristen and I got dropped off second and met Alba, our host mother. She doesn’t speak a lot of English which is good because it forced us to speak in Spanish right away and find ways to explain ourselves when we lacked the vocabulary. She is very good about correcting us, making us use full sentences, etc. We share a room with 2 beds, a TV (personally I’d rather have free internet, but Spanish TV will definitely help me to learn more!) and some crates to put our clothes. Our bathroom is attached to the room with the standard bathroom/shower stuff. I’ll post pictures later. Last night we pretty much organized our stuff and talked a lot. We made a list of our questions for both Christopher and Alba…and the list keeps growing (of course!) We were able to get a decent amount of sleep after we unpacked, especially after we were told it was okay to not get up for breakfast today since it is at 7:30!! Honestly, the worst part is the heat and humidity, but I knew what I was getting myself into so I”ll just have to adjust. I don’t ever see myself wearing those jeans I brought though!!!

(I'll be writing the date/time at the top of each post because it might be different than when it actually gets on the internet...)
